We have a 165 pound Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
named Zeus. This story starts with a simple cyst
we discovered on Zeus? tail. Since he is a stud
dog, we thought maybe it had to do with his stud
tail condition (dry skin on the tail), so we
had Dr. K take a look at it. When we showed up,
we went through our routine - Zeus barks at everyone,
the staff laughs and says hello, and Dr. K says
?Go to your room? and Zeus marches down the hall
into Exam Room #3. So Dr. K examines the cyst
and gives us a cream, but he recommends that
we draw blood and have his urine analyzed since
Zeus is getting up in age, especially for a large
dog. We agree. Then a few days later, Dr. K informs
us that his protein levels in his urine came
in a bit high. He requests that we do more tests
to see if there is anything wrong with his kidneys.
We agree. He discovered that it definitely points
to his kidneys. So he suggests that we do an
ultrasound to get a better picture of what exactly
we are dealing with. We agree. We go back to
Riverside Animal Hospital and do the ultrasound.
He tells us that Zeus is in the early stages
of kidney disease. But then he tells us the really
bad news ? they found a tumor on Zeus? spleen.
Dr. K gives us the news which breaks our hearts,
but he tells us that we are fortunate. If it
is cancer, we can start treatment now. And if
it is not and we did not know about it, then
the tumor could have burst, and Zeus could have
died suddenly. Therefore, Dr. K arranged for
surgery the very next day. After the surgery
throughout the day, the staff was fantastic ?
everyone checked in to see how Zeus was recovering
and they did everything to make us feel comfortable.
Many stayed late that day to make sure he was
recovering and some even returned late that night
to check in on him ? including Dr. K. A few days
later we got the biopsy results and we received
the great news that the tests were negative ?
ZEUS was CANCER FREE!!! If Dr. K was not so dedicated
and thoughtful in his assessments, we know in
our hearts that we would have come from work
one day only to find the demise of Zeus. He gave
us a few extra years to enjoy with our baby and
for that we are extremely grateful. We are faced
with Zeus? kidney disease, but since we found
it so early, we have many options to help slow
it down as much as possible. So I strongly recommend
to get blood and urine tests yearly. Also, we
used to live in the Upper West Side, but moved
a few years ago. So now we drive over an hour
to see Dr. K ? that just shows how much we love
and respect Dr. K and the staff at Riverside
Animal Hospital.

When our cat Liza's breathing turned raspy
we worried she had bronchitis. After two weeks
on antibiotics and no improvement, we feared
the worst.
Dr. Colon discovered a mass in Liza's
throat - a very large one. The outlook did not
look good and due to its location it was inoperable.
But Dr. Colon recommended a course of steroid
treatment to try to shrink it. We were hopeful
that it would get small enough to operate and,
hopefully, it wouldn't be cancerous.
After five
weeks on the steroids, Dr. Colon's tracheal
examination found no mass! It completely disappeared,
leaving only a small hole in the palate that
Liza can live with. Through it all, Dr. Colon
was helpful and sympathetic. She answered all
of our questions, explained all the options,
and was so gentle with our baby Liza. She helped
give us the best Christmas gift we could have
received this year - our little girl is happy,
healthy and back to her old self.
THANK YOU,
Dr. Colon, Dr. K, and everyone at Riverside Animal
Hospital.

Dr K was great with our guinea pig, Guinness.
Guinness was somewhat shy, but he warmed right
up to Dr K even though he was in a great deal
of pain, and we even learned how to speak a little
bit of guinea piggish. Although Guinness is no
longer with us, the help that we received at
Riverside Animal Hospital was priceless. Thank
you.

My cats have only been patients of Riverside
Animal Hospital for a short time but what a time
it has been. I first came to their offices when
my oldest cat Jade was not doing well at all.
I was told that she had hepatic lipidosis and
was completely dehydrated and in a fairly severe
state.
Dr. Martinez had this wonderful soothing
voice and I knew then that Jade was in the best
hands possible. After two days at their offices,
Jade was slowly getting better but not quite
eating well enough. Dr. Martinez recommended
that I take her home and give her lots of love
to see if she would regain her appetite. With
a lot of love (and force feeding), Jade is 15
and still going strong with us today. I feel
that at a time when it was difficult to make
decisions and I was in my worst emotional state,
Dr. Martinez acted more like a friend than a
vet and I will always be grateful for that.

I am writing
to express my gratitude to Drs. Raclyn and Greene
for taking such great care of my dog, Lola. Last
winter my 80-pound Golden Retriever started waking
me up during the night to take her out. Once we
got outside she had horrific bloody poops that looked
like her insides were coming out. As horrifying
as it was, I thought it was just the virus that
was going around and hesitated to bring her to the
vet.
My usually energetic non-stop dog started moping
around I knew something was really wrong. When I
realized it wasn't\'t going away I took her to see
the doctors at Riverside. Lola spent many days at
the hospital undergoing many different tests, all
coming up with nothing - she hadn't eaten a tennis
ball, there were no parasites, and no blockages.
Her bloody, urgent poops persisted over the next
few days, but her appetite never went away.
After careful evaluation the doctors decided to
treat her as if she had colitis, and after just
a few days on the supplements and fiber Lola
returned to being the happy, energetic dog she was
before. The doctors were
so patient and kind, and listened carefully to everything
I told them about Lola\'s daily activities.
There were so many pieces to put together but at
the end they were able to cure my pup.
Lola has been completely healthy for months and
is continuing on her natural remedies. Thanks
to Doctor Raclyn and Dr. Greene I know that Lola
will get the best medical care for all of her years
to come. They are a wonderful group of doctors and
I feel lucky to have found them.

I have to
tell my dog loving peers about my miracle tonight...
Around 9:30pm I noticed my dog has little red lumps
all over his chest, thirety minutes later his face
was affected and about an hour later his hind legs
turned pink and bumpy. I slowly began freaking out.
I posted my fears on CRAIGSLIST.COM and SO many
people offered advice about Benydryl, so I went
out and bought some. By the time I cut it in half
and gave it to my dogs the bumps were traveling
up his back. Milo appeared just fine, he wasn\'t
scratching and he wasn\'t biting, just kinda laying
there-- nothing unusual. I told myself to wait until
the morning to see a vet. But by 12:30am I was in
a panic thinking mydogs throat was going to close
and he would slowly die in the middle of the night.
I googled \"all night vet clinics west side
manahattan\" and took off outside with Milo
and a vague plan to head tot he east side animal
clinic. As I am walking I saw a awoman with a dog
and rushed over to her asking if she knew where
an all night animal hopsital was on the west side.
She calmly looked over my dog and asked what the
problem was. I quickly responded byshowing Milo\'s
reash on his face and onto his stomach and explained
that I was desperate and cannot wait unitil the
morning. This woman was a VET!!! She took me to
her (closed) clinic and took care of Milo, giving
him a shot, bathing him with oatmeal shampoo and
she gaveme pills for his reaction.
She spent over and hour caring for Milo on a SUNDAY
night after MIDNIGHT. Only in Manhattan can you
rush out fo the house praying for a vet and find
one a block away. I owe Dr. Greene and Riverside
Veterinary Group more than they can ever know. Kristine

This is a
story about our cat, Runtashiro.
Our 13-year-old boy has always had health problems.
At age two he developed severe asthma, which, over
the years, we have managed with prednisone tablets.
The asthma didn\'t seem seasonal, so we always took
precautions to avoid using things that would put
fine particles in the air (candles, perfume, etc.),
as well as using more natural cleaning products
in our home, and by giving him the healthiest food
we could find. It was heartbreaking to watch him
flatten himself against the floor like an iguana,
coughing out air in order to breathe. Periodically,
when he had gone a long stretch without an episode,
we would try to lower his dosage of prednisone,
but year after year he would need a higher daily
amount.
Soon after his eleventh birthday, Runtashiro required
a sudden and unexpected surgery to remove a benign
osteoma that was pressing against his spinal cord,
causing paralysis of his back end. The surgery went
well, and over time he regained a good amount of
his former mobility (his high-jumping days were
over, but he could climb stairs and hop onto low
objects). Unfortunately he developed hyperaesthesia,
and would scratch at the site of the surgery until
it became raw and bloody. We had to fashion a little
coat for him to wear that protected his hot spot.
He learned over time that he could pull it off if
he really wanted to—but he kept it on more
often than not. On the whole he was okay, with his
high doses of prednisone, but the scratching was
a major problem.
Without warning, our older cat, Jersey—who
had always been very healthy—was diagnosed
with inoperable cancer, and quickly died. Runtashiro
sank into a depression. He wouldn't get up to eat
or use the litter box. We had to do everything for
him. Our local vet did a blood work-up on him; the
numbers seemed to indicate potentially serious problems.
Common sense told us he was in mourning, and this
was affecting his immune system. We didn't want
to put him through invasive testing when he was
in such a fragile state, but we wanted to be responsible.
I began looking for a holistic vet, who might look
at Runtashiro's problems as part of a totality.
We chose Riverside and Dr. Raclyn. As part of Runtashiro\'s
new program, Dr. Raclyn suggested acupuncture to
help his hyperaesthesia and mobility. After several
weeks the scratching bouts began to subside (the
coat came off!), and he was more interested and
successful in jumping on and off some of the low
furniture in our house.
But the most remarkable thing was the surprising
effect the acupuncture had on his breathing! Since
he was doing so well, we decided to try lowering
his prednisone again. Every week we cut back a little
more, since he seemed to be unaffected by the diminishing
dosage. In recent years, he needed at least 5mg
of prednisone a day in order to feel normal. Within
several months, we took him down to zero. After
eleven years of treating his asthma with a drug
we didn't want to give him, but was the only thing
that helped, we still can\'t believe he's finally
free of it. Thank you, Dr. Raclyn and Dr. Greene,
for helping our friend! Runtashiro continues to
progress with his mobility, and rarely scratches.
He may not be as light-footed as he used to be (who
is?), but he's getting more exercise with a new
little brother in the house. We are so grateful
for all that Riverside has done for him. THANK YOU!! |
